‘Health is Wealth’ to Kevin Hart Who Continues to Inspire Others After Losing His Mom to Ovarian Cancer

Hart is currently preparing for a new gaming-adventure movie entitled Borderlands. In an Instagram story Sunday, Hart gave fans an update on his movie and in true comedic form threw in some quips about “aging backwards” despite his graying hair. He also reminded viewers that “health is wealth” – a sentiment that Hart has always taken very seriously.

In a recent Instagram post, Hart shared a video that not only showed his daily work ethic to prepare his body for the upcoming role but also encouraged others to be their best selves too.

"Motivate yourself! Push yourself!” Hart said. “Open your own door!”

Hart regularly using his platform to encourage others to work hard, and he gives us a wonderful example of how to move forward after losing a loved one to cancer.

Understanding Ovarian Cancer

Hart lost his mother, Nancy, to ovarian cancer in 2007. Dr. Beth Karlan, a gynecologic oncologist at UCLA Medical Center, says the term ovarian cancer refers to a number of different tumors that reside in the ovary, the female reproductive organ. She also says that ovarian cancer can be difficult to recognize as its symptoms may be subtle.

"Ovarian cancer does not have any specific symptoms,” Karlan said in an earlier interview with SurvivorNet. “It's often referred to as the cancer that whispers, in that it has symptoms that are really very vague…and nothing that may bring your attention directly to the ovaries."

Ovarian Cancer: The Cancer That Whispers

Dr. Karlan advises women to keep an eye out for a variety of possible symptoms.

"The symptoms include things like feeling full earlier than you usually would when your appetite is strong," she said. "Feeling bloated," is another symptom, she added. "Some changes in your bowel habits. Some pain in the pelvis. These are symptoms women may have every month. These are not very specific. But what we've found from multiple studies, it's this constellation of symptoms."

Losing a Loved One to Cancer

Losing a loved one to cancer can cause immeasurable pain, as Hart can surely attest to. In his mother’s absence, Hart has been determined to stay motivated and achieve things that will make his mom and himself proud. Doing things to keep yourself motivated and happy are incredibly important, but seeking outside resources can also be a huge help. One to place to begin can be therapy.

"I was dealing with some really intense anxiety and depression at that point,” Legaspi said. “It just changed my life, because I was so drained by all the negativity that was going on. "When you lose someone, it's really, really, really hard," Legaspi said. "I'm so happy that I talked to my therapist. Keep your chin up, and it's going to be OK. No matter what happens, it's going to be OK."
