June Swank’s cancer story has a lot to do with acceptance … and a little to do with some nice retail therapy. June says she was completely blindsided when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. In fact, she says she looked so flustered after she received her diagnosis that when she got home, her husband asked her if she had been in a car accident. “I wish I had,” June recalls saying. When she learned to accept what she couldn’t change about the diagnosis, she was able to focus on fighting the disease.
Part of that fight was knowing when to treat herself. “I bought a new computer, I bought a new TV,” June laughs. Purchases don’t have to be quite so extravagant, but a lot of survivors tell us that enjoying a little “me time” can make a huge difference when you’re dealing with the stress of cancer.
