Colon Cancer Screenings
Sharon was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2002. She had three months of chemotherapy to treat her disease, and it was effective. Sharon is cancer-free today, and her positive attitude is so inspiring. Colon cancer is detected via colonoscopy, which looks for polyps small growths that can turn into cancer on the colon.

Dr. Zuri Murrell, a Colorectal Surgeon at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, said in a previous interview what happens during a colonoscopy. He explained the process, saying, “People often ask me, what do you do when you have a colonoscopy? What’s done? Do you do biopsies? So a colonoscopy can be done for many things. But when we’re looking at a colonoscopy for colorectal cancer screening, what we do is we’re looking for polyps, which are these small growths.”

Dr. Murrell said that the removal of polyps is pain-free. “When we see a polyp, we actually physically take the polyp out through the colonoscope. What does that mean? That means we basically put a wire through with a little bit of a little flange at the end and we pull the polyp out. Now, note there is no pain with that. Inside the colon, there are no pain fibers. So there’s no pain. What happens is then when we take the polyp out, we send that to a lab. In about five to 10 business days, we get the results back.”
Then, the polyp is examined so there’s more information about its status and growth-potential. “So when it’s in the lab, a pathologist basically cuts up the little polyp and looks under a microscope. And underneath the microscope, they can decide whether or not it is early cancer or whether it is just a precancerous polyp. 95% of polyps are precancerous polyps. And what does that mean? That means that it’s not a cancer yet.”

Having a Supportive Partner Through Cancer
Sharon has been very vocal in singing husband Ozzy’s praises; she’s spoken online about how he’s a good listener and shared all the fun adventures they have together whether it’s chilling at home with the dogs, or going on far-flung vacations. Ozzy even rang up pal Robin Williams to come over and make Sharon laugh as she was battling cancer.
Actress and melanoma survivor, Jill Kargman, believes that cancer can be incredibly clarifying when it comes to the strength of a relationship. In an earlier interview, Kargman candidly said, “I think cancer is a great way to find out if you’re with the love of your life or a shithead. I think it presses the fast forward button on getting to the bottom of that answer.”
Kargman stressed how important it is to have a supportive partner, too. “Because a lot of people in middle age are kind of at a crossroads, waiting for their kids to fly the coop. And I think if you’re with someone who is not supportive and kind of emotionally checked out or doesn’t tell you you’re still beautiful with that, this might not be your person.”
