When dealing with cancer, reach out to your community to connect with the support you need. That’s breast cancer survivor Sharonda Vincent’s advice. Sharonda explains that in particular, a lot of women of color may feel like the don’t really have resources and support available to them. “A lot of women don’t have the support or the finances … you know, they’re embarrassed and don’t know how to ask or say that they need the help,” Sharonda says. “But I would encourage them to reach out.”
For survivors looking to connect with others who have been through similar struggles, there are so many resources available. A lot of survivors tell us they look on social media or consult with social workers. Sharonda says she joined a Facebook group for women of color and she turns to the group when she’s feeling sick or alone. “I think it’s very important to connect to different resources in the community,” Sharonda says. “Whether it be on social media, through your church or schools … I think it’s very important.”
