There’s only one vaccine that has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of metastatic melanoma patients. Talimogene Laherparepvec (T-VEC) is a modified herpes virus that’s injected directly into the lesion and causes the death of cancer cells. It is approved for melanoma that cannot be surgically removed. There have been a number of studies of other potential melanoma treatments, but so far none have been successful.
Additionally, both targeted therapies and immunotherapy have been very successful in treating stage four disease.
