David Dubin has Lynch Syndrome … that means he carries a genetic mutation that predisposes him to several cancers. People who have Lynch Syndrome have an 80% chance of developing colon cancer in their lifetime. But when he was first diagnosed with the disease in the 90s, when he was 29 years old, he didn’t know anything about this genetic mutation. Doctors weren’t necessarily recommending genetic testing for people who would be considered high-risk today.
“Back in 1997, nobody was talking about genetics. We just knew that my grandfather had colon cancer, my father had colon cancer, and I had colon cancer,” David says. “In 2007, when the cancer returned, I had the genetic testing done. And that’s when it was determined that it was Lynch Syndrome … it predisposes you to certain types of cancer.”
