A cancer diagnosis can be hard on the whole family. Luckily for makeup artist and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma survivor Ramy Gafni, his was there for him every step of the way. In fact, his mother is a cancer survivor herself and was able to serve as a role model for Ramy during the toughest parts of his cancer journey.
“I was hanging out in the den with my dad and my sister, and my mom was just gone for a long stretch of time,” Ramy says. “I went to look for her to see what’s up … and I ended up going down to the basement and I saw her in the laundry room crying. I asked her what’s the matter, and she said ‘You look terrible! … I wish I could go through it for you.'”
Ramy says his mother actually had cancer three times, the first time when he was just nine years old. Knowing how strong his mother was, and how brave she was when she took on cancer was really inspirational for him … it kept him going. “She was my role model,” Ramy says. “I was like, well she got rid of it and got on with her life, and I’m going to do the same.”
