This new addition is sure to bring some light to a family who recently experienced a loss. In September 2019, the Hadids lost the matriarch of their supermodel family, Ans van den Herik. She was the grandmother to both Gigi and Bella Hadid, and the mother of former model Yolanda. She passed away at the age of 78 after battling cancer six times throughout her lifetime.
Though the Hadid family did not share specific details on the type or stage of cancer that Herik was battling, she had been facing the illness since at least June 2017, when Bella shared on Instagram that her grandmother was "going through the hardest struggle of her life battling cancer again." When Herik passed away, Gigi penned a touching tribute in her honor.
“Our queen angel fought cancer six times in her life with courage, strength, and grace while being the greatest mother and grandmother," Gigi wrote. "She is an honorable guide we will carry with us forever. We love you more than words, our beautiful wonderful Oma.”

Taking on Cancer as a Family
Support sometimes has the ability to make or break a cancer treatment process, and families who take on cancer as a team may be able to turn this difficult challenge into a bonding experience. When makeup artist Ramy Gafni was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, he turned to his mother to guide him through his journey. She is a cancer survivor herself, having battled blood cancer when he was nine years old. Ramy was able to her push through treatment like a true warrior, so she was able to serve as a role model for Ramy during his darkest moments.

“My mom has had cancer like three times, and she’s still with us happily,” Ramy tells SurvivorNet. “She had Hodgkin’s disease when I was nine years old, and here I was at 31 with non-Hodgkin’s. So she was my role model. I was like, well, she got rid of it, got on with her life, and I’m going to do the same.”
