Franca DiPaola has a few things she considers good luck – lady bugs, hearing the song “American Pie,” and seeing a drag queen. After she was diagnosed with breast cancer, her friends arranged so that she got all three of her good luck charms in one absolutely delightful performance. There’s nothing like a good support system behind you to make a cancer journey more manageable.
Franca says that cancer really showed her who her friends were – and she’s so lucky to have them. “When you find out you have cancer, you find out who your true friends are,” says Franca. The disease also showed her that she had a good man by her side. “I stared a relationship with David in October 2012, I was diagnosed with cancer in August of 2013 … so we didn’t even make it a full year.”
Lucky for Franca, even though the relationship was new, David was by her every step of the way while she underwent cancer treatment. “He was there the whole time, he was there holding my hand. I looked down and I said, ‘This man is never going to let go of my hand, he’s not going anywhere.'”
