When you’re going through a tough time, sometimes a little wine and quality time with your best girl friend is the perfect pick-me-up. Actress Shannon Doherty has been battling stage 4 breast cancer for months, so she knows firsthand how valuable support can be, and her pal Sarah Michelle Gellar couldn’t be more grateful.
On Instagram, Gellar, 43, shared a photo of her and Doherty, 49, hanging out poolside while enjoying a glass of wine. In the post, Gellar called Doherty her #womencrushwednesday and gushed about Doherty’s unwavering support throughout their lengthy friendship.

“Today I want to raise a toast to @theshando,” Gellar wrote. “Everybody deserves to have a friend like Shannen…I’m just lucky that I get to claim her. This has been a hard month for me, and even with everything on her plate, she takes care of me like no other. I feel so lucky, and just wanted to send some insta love her way. I love you S.”
Throughout Doherty’s cancer journey, she’s been able to be surrounded by her close friend such as Gellar and actress Selma Blair, and is clearly giving back some kindness. Doherty was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015, and the disease had spread to her lymph nodes. She underwent estrogen therapy treatments, a mastectomy, chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery before declaring herself cancer-free in 2018. However, in February 2019, she revealed to GMA’s Amy Robach that her cancer had returned, and doctors diagnosed it as stage 4.
While Battling Cancer, Find Your Support System
Luckily for Doherty she’s managed to find the ultimate sisterhood of support who lifts her up during cancer treatment, and many survivors have said having people in your corner is the most helpful resource to fight through treatment.
Breast cancer survivor Vera Trifunovich was able to find her own sisterhood while battling the diagnosis, which included her beloved Zumba classes and local support groups. In many cases, support groups can be a cathartic place for people to go to in order to express their emotions to others who are going through similar experiences, and so Vera reached out to women facing the same journey she was.

Inspired by the support she received, Vera decided to create her own community to help other women. From there, Bare Breasted Against Breast Cancer was born — a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering women facing cancer.
“What mattered to me was hearing how many stories there are out there,” Vera says. “And learning from all of these other women. Because that’s what it really all boils down to, we are a sisterhood.”
