How do you tell your loved ones that you have cancer? It’s a really tough decision for a lot of people. From what members of the SurvivorNet community have told us, your best bet is to turn to someone who you trust with your frustrations, and with your uncertainties – whether that be a friend, a spouse, or even a colleague. Lillian Kreppel, who developed anal cancer because of HPV, says she was completely blindsided after her diagnosis. She didn’t even know HPV could cause anal cancer. She says she turned to her best friend first.
“The first person that I told was my best friend. She had known that I had this itch … she knew I was going to the doctor, and I said, ‘You’re never going to believe this, remember that itch? It’s cancer,'” Lillian says. “We knew about cervical, we know about ovarian, we didn’t know about anal.”
