Pancreatitis is a condition involving the swelling of the pancreas, usually triggered when digestive juices or enzymes attack the organ, which produces enzymes that break down food for the small intestine. The pancreas is also the organ responsible for producing insulin and glucagon, which control the body’s blood sugar level. The condition can be either sudden or ongoing, according to the John Hopkins Medicine. Acute pancreatitis is a sudden inflammation that doesn’t last long and the organ returns to normal afterwards. However, it can still cause serious problems or even be deadly.Chronic pancreatitis, on the other hand, comes and goes over an extended period of time and can cause permanent damage to the pancreas, including scarring. In some cases, the organ might stop producing its important enzymes.
There are several causes of the condition:
- Alcohol abuse
- Gallstones that block the pancreatic duct, trapping enzymes in the pancreas.
- Injuries or surgery to the abdomen or other trauma
- Elevated levels of calcium in the blood
- Infections like mumps, salmonella or hepatitis A and B
- Tumors
- Congenital abnormalities
- Smoking cigarettes
Symptoms can vary from person to person but frequently involve severe pain, nausea, vomiting, elevated heart rate, lowered blood pressure or fever.
It’s unclear what treatment Barker is receiving but pancreatitis is often treated with hospital stays of a few days that allow the pancreas to rest.
All About Colonoscopies
According to the Mayo Clinic, colonoscopies, which involve inserting a long, flexible tube with a camera on the end into the rectum, are used to look for changes in the large intestine. Those changes include swollen or irritated tissues, polyps or cancer.
Doctors recommend colonoscopies for a variety of reasons including:
- Searching for causes of abdominal pain or bleeding, as well as other intestinal problems.
- Searching for polyps in patients who have had them before.
- To insert a stent or remove a foreign object from the colon.
For people 45 or older, a colonoscopy is recommended every 10 years. However, people with higher risk of colon cancer usually may be told to get them done at a younger age.
The procedure has very few risks, but on rare occasions, may cause bleeding if tissue was removed, such as a polyp or a sample taken for biopsy.
A tear in the colon or rectum wall can also occur, as well as a reaction to the sedative.
