After Losing a Loved One, Memories are Important
Losing a parent to cancer is of course an incredibly difficult thing to go through, but when you’re still young, it can be even harder. Everyone copes with loss in different ways, but just because someone is gone, doesn’t mean precious memories should be forgotten.
Camila and Edgar Legaspi lost their mother, Gabriela, to breast cancer when they were just in high school. While speaking to SurvivorNet, the Legaspis recollect on the strength and bravery they saw their mother exhibit during her treatment.

"Despite going through chemotherapy, despite going through radiation, she would show up at everything," Camila said. "…I remember going on so many walks with my mom that year, and doing fun activities, and treating her the way that she wanted to be treated, and just giving her the love that she wanted."
Even though going through chemo can be an excruciating experience, Gabriela never stopped smiling throughout the experience. As a family, they were able to find humor in certain situations, and grew stronger through those moments.
“I actually hadn’t appreciated how big of an effort she made to maintain a semblance of normality, and have us live our lives the way that she wanted us to live them,” Edgar says. “The most tangible aspect of her legacy is how we’ve become such a strong family.”
