Radiation can be used to treat stage four lung cancer in two different situations. It has been used as part of palliative treatment to shrink tumors, which ideally will help alleviate some of the cancer symptoms such as trouble swallowing, coughing and pain. Dr. Billy Loo of Stanford Medicine says radiation also can be used in “special cases where the spread…to other parts of the body may be very limited. ” Loo says that in these cases intense radiation can be used in an attempt to cure the cancer completely.
