Terry Crews and wife Rebecca sent a profound message of support to Chrissy Teigen and John Legend after the tragic loss of their baby. The Crews family knows first-hand what the couple is going through, having also experienced the pain of losing a child; and recently faced down the devastation of cancer.
When you experience such a tragedy, connecting with others who have gone through the same experience can be a very helpful resource in coping. However, it’s important to remember that it’s not necessary to “move on” after losing a loved one because that’s often difficult to do. It’s OK to not be strong all the time, and take some time to mourn.
Terry and Rebecca talked to SurvivorNet in July about going through hardships as a team. The couple have been married for 30 years, and over the decades, have experienced challenges some people could only imagine.
“My wife and I have been through a lot of things,” Crews tells SurvivorNet. “We’ve lost homes, we’ve lost children before, things that would’ve taken a lot of people out, and we survived them all…When you look at the marriage vows, it’s not when everything’s great. This is where the rubber meets the road.”
Clearly the Crews can take on any challenge as long as they have one another, and their devoted love helped prepare them for yet another challenge — Rebecca’s breast cancer diagnosis.
Rebecca Crews’ Breast Cancer Journey
Rebecca Crews, 54, was diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer and underwent a double mastectomy in March, just a few weeks before the COVID-19 quarantine restrictions were implemented. She broke the news to her husband that she had been diagnosed with the disease while he was innocently running on the treadmill. Understandably, Crews struggled processing the information and immediately jumped to the worst-case scenario. However, Rebecca put a stop to that.
“I actually felt a mild panic attack,” Terry says. “The only way I can describe it is that I felt like my insides were melting. She said don’t look at me like that. I was like ‘right, right, OK.’ It’s almost like she grabbed me and said ‘come on man, wake up.’ She said she was ready to fight, and I knew I needed to be strong.”
After the procedure, Terry served as Rebecca’s caregiver during her recovery. Since Crews’ acting gigs had taken a pause due to the outbreak, he was able to devote all of his time to Rebecca which he says he thoroughly enjoyed. In the end, the whole journey brought them even closer.
“Our love right now is the strongest it’s ever been because we survived,” Terry says. “We made it. You get a new appreciation for what life is. We’ve been through everything, but we have never faced a problem like this. It’s a whole new challenge, and I was proud of how she became a warrior.”
