Hoppus announced his lymphoma diagnosis in June, and regularly kept fans up to date on his progress and experience with chemotherapy. Now, he’s able to look back on the experience and realize his entire perspective on what’s important has changed.
Coping With Chemo Side-Effects
There are a lot of myths about how chemotherapy impacts people's lives. It's sometimes assumed that while undergoing chemotherapy, you'll be restricted to your home and unable to move around but the opposite is true, Dr. Marleen Meyers, an oncologist at NYU Perlmutter Cancer Center, previously told SurvivorNet. Many people can continue to work, and Dr. Meyers encourages her patients to exercise, even if it's just a walk. It can make a huge difference when dealing with fatigue, a common side effect of chemotherapy.
There are also treatments to help with the side effects of chemotherapy. Many medications are available for treating nausea and vomiting as well as anemia. Other side effects such as hot flashes, night sweats and insomnia may be managed with integrative medicine, like mindfulness, yoga, and acupuncture. It’s important to talk to your physician about the best route to take.

How Cancer Changes Perspective
So many cancer survivors have said that though their battle with cancer was a difficult and long process, it brought so many lessons that they appreciate today. For Hoppus, he now appreciates his health even more than he used to and understands not to fret over trivial matters and only focus on what’s important. For breast cancer survivor Fernanda Savino, her journey forced her to take better care of herself.
Savino was a self-proclaimed workaholic who only focused on her work and career in law, but when she was diagnosed with breast cancer at just 38-year-old that all changed. Once beating the disease, Savino decided to prioritize her health more and do activities that made her happy. She also learned to appreciate her friends and family even more as they really stepped up to the plate during her breast cancer battle.
“Cancer brought me so many things, so many lessons that I didn’t realize before,” Savino told SurvivorNet. “Like I didn’t realize life is much bigger than what we do and what we work…I started to take care of my health and be more respectful to my body, to me. I started to exercise more.”
