Amid the COVID-19 outbreak, even celebrities have had to follow lockdown rules. Well, in honor of a very special occasion, Kim Kardashian planned a sweet family reunion for her grandmother, Mary Jo Campbell’s, birthday. As a two-time cancer survivor, Campbell and her family clearly have a lot to celebrate.

On Twitter, Kardashian shared a few photos of Campbell (nickname MJ) visiting the Kardashian’s Malibu home to spend time with Kardashian’s mother Kris Jenner and her four kids (North, Chicago, Saint, and Psalm) in celebration of Campbell’s 86th birthday. According to Kardashian, Campbell has been in lockdown since January due to COVID-19 and a previous, undisclosed, illness she had before the outbreak. Campbell resides in San Diego, and in order to keep the entire family safe, Kardashian says that she and the family got tested before MJ drove up to their Malibu home.
For Campbell and the rest of her family, birthday celebrations are especially sacred. Campbell is a two-time survivor, after overcoming both colon and breast cancer. While it’s unknown when Campbell was diagnosed with either cancers, Jenner has spoken about her mother’s experiences with the disease and now uses her platform to urge routine mammograms and funding for cancer research.

In addition to Campbell, the patriarch of the Kardashian family, Robert Kardashian, passed away from esophageal cancer in 2003, just two weeks after receiving his diagnosis. Seeing as cancer has touched the Kardashian clan in many ways, it’s understandable why celebrating milestones such as a birthday mean so much to them.
Celebrating Life After Cancer
Occasions such as birthdays, anniversaries, or just family get-togethers can sometimes mean the world for cancer survivors. Once completing treatment, living life to the fullest and spending time with loved ones is critical in regaining a new sense of normalcy after cancer.
Chrissy Degennaro was diagnosed with a rare type of blood cancer called multiple myeloma at just 36 years old. She had a two year old son, and known that the cancer was difficult to treat, she didn’t expect to see him enter kindergarten. However, after undergoing rigorous treatment for 14 years (two stem-cell transplants, 27 rounds of chemotherapy, two CAR-T cell transplants, and a clinical trial), she beat the odds and has been able to celebrate milestones with her son and rest of the family.

“You know, I do live one day at a time,” Chrissy says. “Now, maybe I can go a week, a month, but things are looking pretty good. I’m able to be here for more milestones for my son, for more holidays, more birthdays. I do feel like I have had another chance at life.”
