Kevin’s mom, Nancy, passed away in 2007 after her battle with ovarian cancer. According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), approximately 21,750 women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Oncologists say there are some steps that women can take to play defense against this disease’s development.

Dr. Karen Zempolich, a gynecologic oncologist at St. Mark’s Hospital, spoke with SurvivorNet about the ways women can take control of their ovarian cancer risk. Dr. Zempolish emphasized that there are certain things you can do to mitigate your risk, including, taking an oral birth control pill, having children before age 35, and not using high-dose or long-term hormone replacement therapy after menopause. Additionally, living a healthy lifestyle can help reduce your risk. Habits like exercising, getting adequate sleep, and eating a well-balanced diet can all help to lower your risk.

She also told SurvivorNet, “Another important thing that we’ve learned over the last 5 to 10 years is that many if not all ovarian cancers may start within the fallopian tubes, and then develop and spread to the ovaries by the time we find it. Because of that, if somebody is going to have surgery to have their uterus [taken] out for an unrelated reason, but leave their ovaries because perhaps they’re young still and before menopause and want to keep ovarian function for hormone production really those tubes should come out with the uterus.”

Like many who lose a parent to cancer, Hart has found ways to cope, such as focusing on his career and his growing family with wife Eniko Hart.
