A Breast Cancer Survivor's Journey Extends Beyond Final Treatment
- Survivorship is not the end but a new beginning — many breast cancer survivors describe it as a journey to rediscover joy, purpose, and identity beyond treatment.
- Emotional healing often comes from remembering what makes you whole, embracing beauty beyond physical changes treatment may bring, and finding strength in community and personal relationships.
- Breast cancer survivors featured in SurvivorNet’s Breast Cancer Dialogues series say their diagnoses sparked life-changing perspective shifts — from reigniting dreams to pursuing bold new goals and savoring the present.
- Whether through travel, yoga, skydiving, or simply dreaming again, these survivors show that resilience is deeply personal, and joy is still possible, even after cancer.
“It’s finding those things that make you who you are,” Dr. Eleonora Teplinsky, head of Breast Medical Oncology at Valley Health System, says. Dr. Teplinsky hosted a panel of breast cancer survivors to discuss going through treatment, fear of recurrence, and what it’s like to move on after cancer.

Survivor and panelist Karen Xaverius recalls something a doctor once told her at the start of her journey: “She said, ‘Karen, I really think that breast cancer is going to be the thing that saves your life.’”
The perspective of seeing cancer not only as a disruption but as an awakening resonated deeply with other survivors who emerged from treatment with a renewed sense of self.
Ebonie Michelle says that she found comfort and strength in the love of her husband during treatment.
“I was blessed with a husband who reminded me that I am not my breast. My beauty is not my breast,” Ebonie says.

For many, that kind of grounding opens the door to bold reinvention. Deb Song embraced life with a vengeance, reigniting the dreams she once set aside following her breast cancer diagnosis.
“You get one life, and this is it, and I truly believe that. So I got my motorcycle license again, I’m going to fight school, I skydive — I do everything that’s kind of a bit insane but also fun. There’s nothing in life that can stop you if you put your mind to it,” Deb says.

Kelsie Barnhart took a more reflective route, anchoring herself in intention and optimism.
“I made some goals for the year — I wanted to get more habitual with yoga, and I wanted to continue to travel. Thankfully, I’ve been able to plan some trips and go on some trips,” she explains.
“Even if recurrence does come, that doesn’t mean I shouldn’t fully live the day that I have. So it’s super fun to start dreaming again and to see what the future holds.”
